Michal Kus’ original concept art
Stylized House
Although I usually like to make my own characters for animation, I decided to try my hand again at hard surface when I saw the concept art for this house by Michal Kus. The overall style and whimsical details of this house really blew me away and I knew I had to bring it to life in 3D. As always, I started by modeling the base mesh in 3DS max, and then imported it into Zbrush for a higher poly sculpt. Then it was back to 3DS Max for retopologizing and unwrapping, before I exported it into Substance Painter for textures. The model itself wasn’t extremely challenging, but the painting is what really brought this piece to life. I used only base color materials, paired with some height and opacity layers to create the hand-painted style I was looking for. No specularity or metalness was used on this house, I had to achieve a shiny metal look only through the use of colors, which was a fun challenge.
I like to imagine a wacky inventor lives in this house, and that his name is Gustav or something.
